This is a workshop to help us nourish healthy bodies with movement,  while simultaneously nourishing our minds with the books we love.

Reading is considered a sedentary activity, and unfortunately, sedentarism is both on the rise in modern culture while also being linked to numerous adverse health conditions (Note recent headlines declaring “Sitting is the new smoking!”)

Do you love to read but also struggle to get enough movement/exercise into your daily life?

Do you end up feeling stiff, achy and sore after reading but assume that's the price of enjoying a good book?

Do you want to break the rule that “bookish” people can’t be athletes and vice versa?

In this workshop with Movement and Life coach, Patrick Hogan, we’ll explore:

• How movement matters - even more than exercise!

• What postural adjustments will keep your body moving freely even when we’re sitting for prolonged periods of time.

• How to incorporate body nourishing movement into our reading times.

• How creatively re-thinking our position in any daily activity can help our bodies move better and feel better!

About Patrick:

I’m familiar with being out of alignment. I was often the new kid in social groups and felt like an outsider. I didn’t quite take to the normal team sports. From childhood to my twenties I injured myself way too many times through recklessness and pushing too hard. I hopped around in my career paths trying on many roles but nothing quite fit.

The desire to belong is strong in all of us.

For me, I tried to fit into relationships that were either harmful or just not right for me. I had trouble holding boundaries. And I often looked to others to define my sense of self.

I felt lost with no map to help me find my way…
Then, gradually, I learned how to “wayfind” toward my true nature.

My path involved following my passion for physical expression, connecting to nature and tuning in to the intuitive signals of the body.

My injuries forced me to listen to my body and to acknowledge what my body wanted and needed rather than what my ego and culture dictated it should do.

I began studying and then teaching yoga which helped me tune into my mind and body in ways I hadn’t experienced before. Over time, I felt called to study and teach Natural Human Movement (through the Mov Nat system) which helped me reconnect with the natural environment as well as the body’s evolutionary capabilities in a way that truly feels like play.

I knew these practices to be helpful, and yet, observing myself and others remain in patterns of  struggle, I sensed there was a missing bridge for making the changes we desired for our bodies and our felt experiences.

Restorative Exercise (through the Nutritious Movement Institute) showed me how so many of us have developed poor motor skills due to the trappings of modern culture. These teachings illuminated how shifts in lifestyle and movement habits along with educational exercises to realign our bodies can help us move more freely with less pain and therefore pursue the activities that help us live more fully.

But knowing what to do for our health and happiness doesn’t always lead us to make those changes. Through Life Coaching, I tuned into the psychological principle that our beliefs and emotional experiences dictate whether or not we will take action toward the lives we intend. Learning how to dissolve those inner obstacles has helped me navigate toward the life that is aligned with my true nature.

Along this path, I’ve learned to belong more to myself, to align my body for fewer injuries and more energy, and to develop a career path that seems truer for me: helping people align to their own true nature through coaching and education for both movement and life.

I currently live in the Hudson Valley of New York. I find inspiration by interacting with nature through hiking, skiing, cold immersion, climbing, and walking everywhere barefoot.
